Well, now that that step's out of the way I guess I have nothing else to procrastinate with. Give me time, I'll think of something.soul sparrowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11688993662908134294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7710362414394342920.post-36980458240946728172011-01-15T08:44:00.000-08:002011-01-15T08:44:34.606-08:00CookbookBefore I forget: I want to make a collection of my most frequently used recipes in my own art journal free to be scribbled in and cooked from. Sounds fun, yes? :)soul sparrowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11688993662908134294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7710362414394342920.post-71518033290724714592011-01-15T07:12:00.000-08:002011-01-15T07:12:02.880-08:00Spaghetti Squash SpaghettiWow, what a baby I am when it comes to being sick! A little cheese with your whine? Haha, well sorry! I have a little joy to make up for it. Spaghetti Squash! My New Year's resolution (along with the rest of America) was to get into better shape and that (at least for me) involves eating a wider variety of foods.

Aren't they cute?

In steps Spaghetti Squash, a carb replacement option so named after its unique spaghetti like strands that flake off when its cooked. After some difficulty I cut mine in half, put it in a glass dish with 1/4 cup of water and popped it in the microwave for around 12 minutes. Then in my awesome cast iron pan I heated some garlic in oil, added a can of diced tomatoes, some halved fresh cherry tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar, Parmesan cheese, etc. and let it simmer. When the squash was cool enough to handle I used a fork to flake it into spaghetti strands and added it to the sauce. I topped it with fresh basil and more Parmesan before promptly devouring a quarter of it. Yum!
Its a little crisp, or I over cooked mine. And its orange, so it has to be good for you. (Like that logic?) And its yummy and at least two full servings of vegetables! Go me! The new year is looking delicious!soul sparrowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11688993662908134294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7710362414394342920.post-52032797424538447092011-01-11T09:52:00.000-08:002011-01-11T09:52:17.164-08:00New Years MiseryYou probably wouldn't be amazed at all the good intentions I have for this blog come 2011. Cooking, art (possible album art), kitty pictures, etc. I intended to shoot out of the gate and get a head start on the rest of life when a terrible thing happened... allergies.

Now, if you're anything like me you're probably rolling your eyes thinking: take something for them and stop whining. Also, if you're like me (hopefully you're not) your allergies spit in the face of Benadryl, Zirtec, tea, burning hot showers, and many other remedies otherwise thought of as tried and true. I took my prescription strength allergy remedy, continued to leak out of the nose, started to freak out, took some tea and Nyquil(stuffed a tissue up one nostril) and went to bed only to be woken up by my husband who insisted on propping up my pillows because I was breathing ridiculously hard. Now, some of that was probably due to having a soaked tissue stuffed half way into my brain and the other half was the fact that neither of those remedies..remedied anything.

So, slightly grumpy, dizzy, and tired, I sit here now with a burning nose, itching eyes, and a hope that it doesn't spread like last time. Last time my allergies got bad my entire face swelled up (including my eyes which swelled closed), the top layer of my skin turned slightly purple, cracked open and started to flake off, and a disgusting clear ooze coated everything below the eyes and around the nose causing the delicate (already open wound status) skin to become sticky and miserable... When I went into the doctor's the man looked at me like I was some ferak to be studied before asking if I'd fallen face first into some Poison Ivy.

He then suggested I try some pink lotion (the name of which my brain is holding hostage) which ended up burning the crap out of my skin and setting it to "Enraged" status. He also took me off work for a week.

So, in short, these aint no normal allergies! Fingers crossed that this second dose of medicine doesn't laugh in my face (on my face?) and I get to feeling better before I turn into some scaly, angry, mean creature.soul sparrowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11688993662908134294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7710362414394342920.post-61854041927945152772010-11-29T22:23:00.000-08:002010-11-29T22:23:03.854-08:00Stained Glass journal pageHere is what I've been up to:
I have lots of pictures but no motivation to upload them. I haven't even worked on art in almost a month. What happened? I don't know, I guess we all go through phases. Not that it matters, I'm talking to myself here. Hey, its free therapy!
Its got a Christmas feel to it for me - if that makes any sense. I want to run around in my sandals splashing in puddles. :-)

Rain aside, I have been experimenting with cooking asian cusine. So far I've made: Spinach Mushrooms and Tofu in Clear Broth , Cashew Chicken , and Miso Soup with Kombu and Katsuo Dashi mmmm, so yummy!

If you're going to make any of these and have cats I would suggest guarding your fish flakes and or wearing metal pants because little Macaroni just about crawled up my leg when I opened them.

For some reason there is no asian (aside from Japanese and indian) food out where I live and mine never tasted like what it should when I made it until now. The Dashi broth and the oyster sauce is so worth it. It gives it that yummy authentic taste. Go get some, you wont be sorry!

I have some mixed media cards I want to share. Literal playing cards. They're some of my favorite work. Will upload sneak peak soon!
Condensed.

If you've been in Southern California over the summer you know what I'm talking about. LA goes up in smoke at least once, but usually more. While this journal page wasn't initially dedicated to that little useless bit of information, it sort of turned into that. I didn't like how it looked when I was working on it (some time around 3 AM when J was still on the night shift) but after some sleep and sunlight I took another look. Its my favorite for now. We'll see what time brings :)

I used Oil pastels, printed papers, embossing powder, ink, gold and sharpie marker, and lots of other stuff I'm probably not remembering right now. Here are pictures. Please enjoy. :D

and this is the answer: YES!

Do you like pretty? Shiny? Touchable? Cheap? (I promise this is not a hair care commercial!) Then you would probably love embossing. I use it on almost every page and it makes me happy - like icecream happy, happy. (that's pretty happy!) There are some good examples on my Fire on the Hills of Los Angeles page, but here's another if you're too lazy to go back - I would be. :)

This has already been embossed. See the texture? I love it!

How do you do this wonderous thing! You may ask. Its not hard, you can do it too. All you need is a paper to emboss on, a heat gun, an ink pad, and some embossing powder. An extra piece of scrap paper or two doesn't hurt to make sure the powder gets back into the bottle.

This is the embossing powder I'm currently using. I think I got it for 3 bucks at the local craft store.

Using a stamp or some other means (my favorite includes direct to paper from pad) apply ink. Before the ink dries pour your powder over it. Make sure you have another paper beneath your art piece to catch anything that spills... or maybe you don't need one and I'm just clumsy. :)

After you've tapped off the excess you'll have a thin line of pretty gold (or whatever color you choose) powder. Don't get all excited and touch it yet you still need to heat it. Fire up your gun and get to heating! I hear that you can use a blow dryer but I've never tried. I've also heard that you could hold it over the stove but something about fire and paper and..me.. doesn't sound right. So I use my heat gun. I start about 6 inches away and get closer if I need to. Be careful because it can make the page curl. I haven't noticed anything that a little uncurling doesn't fix, but I thought I should warn you.

As the city gave way to open desert hawks soared the pale blue sky. They always looked so at peace, separate from the world. Somehow I got it into my head that they were messengers carrying words from our hearts through the heavens. Little do they know the inspiration they planted in the heart of a child.

So, with that in mind here is the first page of my art journal. I don't have a full shot yet because I couldn't get the lighting right and it was washing out the colors. I'll try again with natural light but until then here are some details. Enjoy! :)
